The Craft Pavilion is a celebration of Rajasthan's extraordinary craft heritage — a purpose-built facility that serves simultaneously as a gallery, marketplace, demonstration centre, and maker's residency. Commissioned by the Rajasthan Crafts Council, the project was designed to create a world-class platform for traditional artisans while attracting international visitors, buyers, and collectors.
Discuss a Similar ProjectThe programme demanded a building that could function as multiple different things simultaneously without any space feeling compromised. Exhibition quality lighting standards had to coexist with the humidity and dust management requirements of an active workshop. The public marketplace and private residency had to be organisationally distinct while sharing infrastructure. And the building needed to feel deeply Rajasthani without becoming a caricature.
The building is organised as a series of courts and colonnades — drawing on the spatial logic of the traditional haveli but reinterpreted in contemporary materials. Central to the design is a 'demonstration spine': a covered colonnade where master craftsmen work publicly, visible to both the gallery and marketplace spaces on either side. Natural ventilation, operated chalk-stone screens, and a passive evaporative cooling system keep energy consumption minimal.
